Prerequisites for School Development Planning

Vision and Aims:

  • Regular review of school's vision in consultation with partners, its impact on practice on daily basis.

Teaching and learning:

  • A system for monitoring teaching and learning activities e.g. work preparation, collaboration, assessment of pupil effort and achievement; system of reporting to parents/resource personnel etc.; case conferences in relation to pupils as necessary. (recorded in the development section of the School Plan).
  • Planning meetings with deputy principal/ post of responsibility holders/individual or groups of teachers/support/resource personnel as appropriate
  • Planning meetings for staff on class basis - note and act re any resource implications.
  • A way to follow up on teaching and learning issues from all meetings.
  • Support system for mentoring/liaising with newer staff members / substitutes / other personnel.
  • Agenda(e) for staff/class level/other meetings to ensure planning time is built in for teaching and learning issues.
  • A mid year diary used as a cuntas míosúil -checked regularly. Issues not dealt with carried forward. Areas for review noted for the following year as these occur. Write reminders on the relevant dates in the diary of the subsequent year.
  • Classrooms/resource rooms visited regularly by principal towards positive involvement in learning - affirmation of pupils' and teachers'/others' efforts.
  • Arrangements for displays of pupils'/other work in school environment/classrooms, corridors etc.
  • Collection of feedback on issues raised at professional in-school meetings - both curricular and organisational - as a way to plan for teaching and learning.
  • On-going monitoring and assessment - see relevant sections of Primary Curriculum documents. 
Administration
  • Clarity in relation to the job specifications / roles and responsibilities for all in school community - principal, promoted posts, mainstream teachers, resource personnel, support staff, BoM, Parents' Association, parents, pupils, wider community, others.
  • System for informing staff of any circulars/other communications which come on stream.
  • System for administering / recording /filing and reporting all current grant aid from Department of Education & Science. Procedures for grants shared with other schools (if applicable).
  • Plan for learning / other requirements for pupils with special needs.
  • Plan for student teachers, transition year students, work experience personnel, others
  • System for letting cleaning or other staff know who is on the premises after hours, which might impinge on their work.
  • Clarity in relation to procedures / ground rules for those using the school/classrooms after hours.
Management Issues
  • Board of Management - principal's report to include school development planning issues/outcomes.
  • BoM members issued with handbooks/Education Act/Management periodicals as required
  • Ongoing review of policies against changing legislation - see Solas of March 2001 & September 2001.
  • Training for BoM members/patron body/on site/other.
  • A system for informing BoM, PTA etc of contents of circulars.
  • Health & Safety Statement reviewed and communicated to all.
  • Procedures for holding fire drill on a termly basis.
  • Organisation of regular assemblies- occasions for good news.
  • A regular check-up on heating supplies and other such maintenance matters.
  • Regular financial statement for staff/others - money lodged and bills paid; receipts and bank statements checked and reconciled.

Community and Communication Issues

  • Enrolment forms and relevant data for new pupils available - welcome packs/school booklet etc.
  • Remember pupils in hospital - cards, visits, contact.
  • Communication with parents re changes in teaching personnel - subs. etc as these occur (perhaps through newsletter).
  • Communication of policies and methodologies as appropriate. 

 


Planning through the Year: September

Teaching and Learning

  • Implementation of Primary Curriculum discussed and reviewed as appropriate (recorded in Development Section of the Plean Scoile).
  • Decision on administrative days for principal for planning if applicable - location, dates, permission, workload, aspects of teaching and learning to be addressed, and recording of same.
  • Learning support in place - individual relevant assessments carried out (parental permission where necessary).
  • Issues re shared staff dealt with e.g. meeting/contact with other schools to arrange to best advantage for pupils of all schools involved.
  • Relevant sections of pleananna scoile distributed to teachers.
  • Meetings re pupil learning arranged between current class teachers and those of previous year as well as with relevant resource teachers/support personnel.
  • Meetings organised with any outside personnel who teach any subject during the school day to co-ordinate their work with the school plan/ curriculum.
  • Books/booklets researched and purchased for staff library.
  • Meetings for parents re curriculum at various class levels; Stay Safe/RSE, Paired Reading etc. organised.
  • Review of curriculum in consultation with staff - areas prioritised for action both long term and short term. School year planned accordingly.
  • A plan for open days /concerts / sports days/ science and technology evening etc. discussed.
  • Staff meetings planned (to include teaching and learning issues).
  • Feedback of ideas from summer/other courses attended by staff sought at staff meeting.

  • School reports issued to parents- following testing etc. and allowing enough time for parental feedback to be addressed.

  • Meetings with deputy principal/post of responsibility holders/individual or groups of teachers/ support/resource personnel re pupil needs as appropriate.

  • Organisation for continuing education for special needs into July if appropriate.
